In fact, calling it a product is rather grand as this miraculous ‘shampoo’ is literally just powdered plant material. Seriously – that’s it – just the seeds from the Shikakai plant’s pods ground into a very fine powder.
No irritating preservatives, colours or fragrances; no synthetic or ‘nature-identical’ ingredients or even ones of questionable ethical origins.
Just nature doing what it does best – providing a totally natural, gentle, and balanced way for us to do what we need to do. In this case, wash our hair.
Shikakai (pronounced ‘she-ka-KAI’) has been helping people in India keep their hair and scalps clean, conditioned and comfortable for 100s if not 1000s of years.

HOW TO USE
We source our Shikakai powder directly from India to ensure that it is of the highest quality and ground to our exact specifications. This ensures that (unless your hair is extremely long) you should only need to use a few grams per wash, and that (unlike all other powders we’ve trialed) it rinses cleanly away.

Here is a general overview of washing options:
- Put 1-2 teaspoons in a jug or squeeze bottle before entering the shower. Fill the receptacle with water from the shower stream and either shake to disperse powder (in bottle) or use shower stream to mix (jug). Pour over head and rinse.
OR: - Make a paste with powder and water. Bring paste into shower and apply to hair. Rinse.
OR: - Apply powder directly to wet hair, scrub and rinse.
Conditioner/Hair oil is optional and unlikely to be required by all but those with very dry hair, following use.
Suitable for all hair and scalp types, including very sensitive. Should be suitable for use on colour treated hair, but a patch test is advisable.
Packaged in a fully recyclable, resealable kraft pouch. Minimum weight 100 grams.
Comes complete with a 9cm long, birch measuring spoon – manufactured from sustainable wood sources and home compostable!

I’m very happy with this shampoo. I have MCAS and need to be careful but this shampoo is brilliant, my curls are more defined and my hair is so soft and manageable. You only need a little.

This shampoo is terrible! I love the all natural soap bars and had high hopes for this shampoo powder, but it was worse than useless. I tried all 3 of the methods suggested for applying the powder and rubbed my scalp well then rinsed thoroughly (the powder takes a lot of rinsing to get all the gritty residue out). My hair was almost sticky to touch while it dried and then looked and felt as though I had not washed it at all! I persisted for 2 weeks with this expensive powder, but have now given up and returned to using my old shampoo bar from a different shop. I’m really disappointed with this product. It does not work at all for me.

Great to hear you love our soap bars but sorry to hear that that the shampoo powder didn’t work well for you. It sounds like you potentially may have been using too much of the powder if your hair was feeling sticky. It can take some trial and error to find an application method that suits.

Was sceptical about using this shampoo at first. But it is amazing! My hair looks and feels really clean and fresh. My friends have commented on how healthy, soft and shiny my hair looks. There really is no transition period, so switching from regular shampoo to this was a breeze. The only draw back is the texture of the shampoo as it is very gritty, but if you can get passed this you’ll love the result! One very happy customer!
